Wander through the remains of the state’s first territorial capital and get a taste of history while you hike, camp or ride horseback. The park features campsites, equestrian access and more than 15 miles of trails—making it a perfect weekend getaway or post-work adventure.

Monroe County, AL

At the river’s shore, this park makes for an easy outdoors day for the entire family. Cast a line, watch out for birds, bring a picnic, paddle or relax waterside. Whatever interests you, there’s plenty of space to spread out and enjoy your time outside.

Clarke County, AL

Feel the wild side in Clarke County at Bashi Creek. Paddle the creek in the summer and spot beautiful fish—and even the occasional alligator—in the quiet backwaters. With seasonal birding and canoe access, the area is a peaceful slice of the Delta.

Franklin, AL

Right off Isaac Creek is a year-round campground with everything you’d want for a family weekend or low-key getaway. Use the boat ramp, dock, playground, basketball court and picnic areas. Whatever you and the family are doing, you can do it here—just bring your cooler and crew.

Convington and Escambia Counties, AL

Conecuh Trail, found within Conecuh National Forest, offers an 18.2-mile escape into the longleaf pine forest. Enjoy time in nature on this beautiful trail.

Atmore, AL

Experience a wildlife refuge that has activities for all. With horse trails, a beach area, fishing, kayaking, year-round swimming and both RV and tent camping, this place has something for everyone––especially families looking to spend a weekend outside.

Florala, AL

Along the shores of Lake Jackson, Alabama’s largest natural lake, Florala City Wetland Park boasts swimming areas, wildlife watching, camping, a birding trail and plenty of space to roam.

Eufaula, AL

This 3.2-mile paved, multi-use path winds through grassy meadows, mixed woodlands and by the shoreline of Lake Eufaula. A hidden waterfall along the way makes this one of the most scenic walks in town.

Dothan, AL

Within the city limits of Dothan lies a 387-acre trail system, offering over 10 miles of biking and hiking trails and six separate loops linked by connectors and bridges. Families, individuals, locals and tourists all enjoy the beauty of these trails. 

Blue Springs State Park

Monroe County, AL

A hidden gem for birders and campers alike, this park borders Claiborne Lake and draws year-round visitors for its birdwatching, paddling and peaceful overnight stays. When looking up to the sky, you’ll likely spot bobwhites, eastern towhees, northern cardinals and an assembly of seasonal birds.

This Forever Wild track spans more than 5,100 acres and offers a beautiful terrain, hunting access and provides a habitat and home for many rare species of plants and animals. The Red Hills Complex might not be a park, but it’s full of natural beauty waiting for you.  

Camden, AL

This quiet park is perfect for campers, birders and paddlers. Here, you can hike, fish or picnic—and there’s a boat access for those looking to explore the water. During hunting season, some areas of the park are open to hunters, so double check your map and keep an eye out. 

Clio, AL

This Alabama hidden gem is becoming less hidden. With a spring-fed pool that stays 68ºF year round, this wiregrass state park is the perfect spot to beat the heat in the pool, camp and enjoy a refreshing summer escape. 

Geneva County, AL

Alabama’s largest state forest is used primarily for lumber, but don’t let that steer you away. With 7,200 acres of longleaf pine, it’s also a haven for ATV riding, hiking, fishing, camping and horseback riding. 

Eufaula, AL

Nestled along the 45,000-acre Lake Eufaula, Lakepoint State Park has campgrounds, playgrounds, a swimming complex and boat launches. It also has plenty of trails for hiking and watching wildlife. Whatever you’re looking for in your time outside, it’s here at Lakepoint.  

Columbia, AL

Camp under the stars or spend the day fishing, hiking or paddling. With a community park and plenty of natural beauty, Omussee Creek Park is a great place to take the family and enjoy an outing. 

Little River State Forest

Millry, AL

This peaceful 84-acre lake is a great place for anglers to reel in a legendary catch. Fish bass, catfish, bream, crappie and more—from the shore or by boat. The lake offers a boat ramp, an ADA-accessible pier, a shaded pavilion and all the quiet you need. Just make sure you bring your fishing license. 

Camden, AL

Experience one of the best places to fish in Southwest Alabama at this go-to fishing spot. With easy boat access to the Alabama River, Roland Cooper State Park is a great place to park an RV or spend a weekend on the water. 

Elba, AL

The perfect place for those who love the outside is this popular Elba riverwalk. Walk or ride along the two-mile trail that overlooks downtown and hugs the Pea River. The flat, scenic path is great for a run, walk with the dog or a stroller-friendly stroll with the kids.  

Dothan, AL

Explore fifty acres of cultivated gardens, native plants and walking paths, open from dawn to dusk. The Dothan Area Botanical Gardens is a quiet, serene spot for plant lovers and those who enjoy spending time outside. 

Beatrice, AL

Just outside Beatrice in Southwest Alabama sits a quiet 94-acre lake, stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish and channel catfish. It’s built for accessibility too, with an ADA-accessible pier. Utilize the paved boat ramp, covered pavilion and table. Be sure to check the hours before heading out, as they can vary. 

Atmore, AL

Fishing, swimming, hiking and birdwatching—all wrapped up in a quaint, forested park that’s perfect for a trip. This popular Atmore location is a great place to spend quality time in nature. Grab the whole family, too. There’s something for everyone. 

Escambia, AL

This 184-acre lake has serious fishing potential and plenty of opportunities to do so. ADA pier, pavilions, concessions and more highlight the lake. Fish bass, bream and sunfish—it’s all fair game here. 

Troy, AL

Part of the Pocosin Nature Preserve, this 75-acre arboretum at Troy University features 8 miles of peaceful, easy trails in the wiregrass region. Wildlife sightings are common, and the trails are open from sunrise to sunset. 

Andalusia, AL

This lakefront day-use area is ideal for summer afternoons. Fish for bass or catfish, take a swim, launch a boat or enjoy a picnic under the trees. It’s everything someone could want from a casual day outside. 

Lake Jackson, Florala

Monroeville, AL

This 20-acre local favorite boasts a lake stocked for fishing, plus a walking trail and a picnic pavilion. Enjoy this laid-back place to bring a rod, lunch or just spend time unwinding in the shade of Alabama.  

Convington and Escambia Counties, AL

Across Convington and Escambia Counties, Conecuh National Forest covers more than 83,000 acres with longleaf pine forest, springs and beautiful trails. Visitors can enjoy multiple recreation areas, including picnic areas, a swimming beach, campgrounds and a public fishing lake. Blue Lake and Open Pond are also great places to visit within the forest as well. 

Brooklyn, AL

With 250 miles of trails across 2,000 acres, Boggs & Boulders is the go-to destination for those who love all things outdoors. There’s camping, swimming pools, trails and a café.  

Brewton, AL

Made for families, Dogwood Hills Park is a great place to spend an afternoon. With a playground, splash pad and short trail, there is something for every age. There’s also summer programming, keeping kids entertained while parents find a moment of quiet. 

Enterprise, AL

Award-winning and well-loved, this family-friendly park has a splash pad, walking trails, pavilions and more. Johnny Henderson Park is great for a casual walk or an outing with little ones.  

Eufaula, AL

This refuge is a must for nature watchers. Spot alligators, deer, songbirds and more along its trails. It’s also one of the best freshwater fishing areas in the country. They don’t call it the Big Bass Capital for nothing. 

Midway, AL

Paddle on Blue Heron Lake or fish for your next meal because this peaceful South Alabama spot is a great place to land. Hike, ride horseback, canoe, fish or camp. Whatever you’re looking for, you can enjoy it here.  

Eufaula, AL

On the shores of Lake Eufaula is Old Creek Town Park with a fishing pier, children’s playground nestled under tall pines, a beach area and picnic spots. Depending on the season, you can spot a number of native animals. 

Escambia County, AL

This 5,300-acre Auburn University facility is part outdoor classroom, part nature escape. Located within Conecuh National Forest, the Solon Dixon Forestry Education Center is a great place to learn, explore and appreciate Alabama’s forested ecosystem.
