“One Day, I’ll Retire Here.” Why a Tech CEO Loves Calling Huntsville Home

Larry Donelson, CEO and co-founder of InTerra, Inc., first came to Alabama in 1993 to work for a company called Intergraph. His job allowed him to travel, but no matter where he went, he always felt good coming back home to Huntsville. Now, his company, InTerra, Inc., produces GPS-enabled ground control points for the drone mapping and surveying industry, along with the software for processing the data. Thanks to his role, he spends time outdoors working with construction and infrastructure—the perfect balance for someone who loves spending time outside.

Part of Larry’s love for Huntsville originates from the area’s beautiful outdoors. Thankfully, when you live in Alabama, you’re never far from an outdoor adventure. Larry and his wife watch the sunset over the Tennessee Valley below at nearby mountains or take in the sky’s changing colors through the reflection of a river.

We asked Larry to delve into his life in Huntsville, how he spends time outside in Alabama, and what has surprised him most as a Huntsville transplant.

What is your favorite way to spend time outside in Alabama?

When I can, I love fishing, shooting sporting clays or traps, and flying. Recently I got to combine two of these – while we were sitting on the bank of the river waiting for the sun to set, a small sea plane flew over, circled and landed on the river. The pilot pulled into Ditto Landing then a few minutes later came back out, circled around again and took off over the mountains. Pretty cool to watch.

Why do these activities mean so much to you?

Engaging in these activities with others can be a bonding experience. It’s more than just doing; it’s sharing the experience that makes it enjoyable.

For example, take shooting sporting clays. I started taking my son’s friends as they grew up and sharing the outdoor experience with groups of young people. They enjoyed doing things that sometimes they had never done before.

What’s your favorite Alabama hidden gem?

We have a few: fishing the tailwaters of Smith Lake Dam for trout, sitting on the brow at Mentone at sunset, or relaxing on the beach at Fort Morgan.

What sets Alabama’s outdoors apart from other states?

This state has a diverse ecosystem, including beaches, rivers, streams, mountains, and vast grazing lands. There really is so much to see and do, and it’s all relatively close together.

What has been the most surprising thing about life in Alabama?

Living in Huntsville has been quite fascinating due to its diverse population. Interestingly, despite this diversity, many of my close friends are actually Huntsville natives. I have a friend who moved to East Tennessee for six years and decided he missed it here in Huntsville. Now, he’s just moved back

What I’ve observed is that whether someone is a local or a newcomer, the people here are incredibly warm and sincere. This goes against the common stereotype that less traveled individuals are not as welcoming or open-minded.

Where do you see yourself and your career going and growing in Alabama?

I will stay here and continue to grow our business. One day I will even retire here because it’s home.

For so many people, Alabama is home. It’s home to adventure, home to business growth, home to community, home to job opportunities. Ready to call it home for yourself? We’ll be your guide to outdoor life and growing roots in Alabama. Follow along on Instagram and Facebook.
